Just recently I was diagnosed with diabetes. Doctor has told me for now I'm a controlled type 2 diabetic. Meaning I can get away with just testing my sugar. No need for meds yet but thats down the road. Anyhow, I asked about classes and testing meters. He gave me my meter free of charge with 10 disc lances to start with. I just take the class to learn the meter but am welcome to stay throughout to learn about complications, diets, insulin and anything else I might need to know before leaving. Two questions:
Take the class or don't take the class? Thats of course if the doctor gives you the option for it.
And secondly, I'm creating a resource binder for my classes. I hate going unprepared. Here's what I have in mind.
Lists:
*Foods (avoid, consider and to have on occation.)
*Complications (nothing big just short paragraphis of each complication diabetes likes to inflect on the body.)
*Pros & Cons of different meters
Is there anything else I should include? Class is in a week and a half for me. I've got some stuff printed but wanted to make sure I had all my bases covered.
I'd definitely take the class, if your doctor gives you that option. In my opinion, there are lots of pros to it, and really no cons that I can see. the knowledge you gain could help make sure your diabetes does not get worse, so you could see it as kind of preventive care. Second, you could learn stuff that might come in very useful if it ever does worsen.
As for things you should keep notes on in addition to your list, I can't think of any, but of course I'm not a diabetic. Someone who is would better be able to answer that one.
i'd take the class, yeah
Definitely take the class. There is no such thing as too much knowledge or being too prepared.
Sounds like you are pretty organized in terms of taking notes.
Just remember, you can get your diabetes under control without medications if you are very careful about what you eat and start exercising and lose some weight. If you are lucky and have self-discipline, you may never have to go on medications.
If they don't bring up foot problems as one of the potential problems in your class, it would serve you well to try to find out some information about this potential complication. Take it from me, diabetes can screw royally with your feet.
